I am having what some people would call 'a really shitty week' - and you are welcome to listen to me whine here.. or not.. it really doesn't matter. (and yes I'm going to say shit a lot in this post..cover your eyes)
I'm in a STANK ass mood right now. I was out Tues/Wed from work feeling like hell from the weather being 80 degrees then 30.. then 75 then 30 and now todays temp is supposed to be 70. It is killing me.
Wed. just was THE shit day.. because people can't plan, wait til the last minute.. then put a huge stress on myself and my assistant. One department decided they needed my assistant to spend the ENTIRE day starting and stopping a video recorder (yes .. i'm serious - no .. I'm not elaborating in the least) A FULL team of military folks, engineers and architects from this company are incapable of pushing a red button apparently. Then another department decides to send out proposals at the last possible minute... and for kicks and grins just 'forget' to communicate anything to my department until the last possible minute. Thursday when I got into work I literally had to check myself multiple times or risk tearing off someone's head.
Today... just all kinds of unnecessary shitty little things that are getting me. (or getting to me) Just minor stuff.. like I handle our company intranet - where we post Continuing Education Credits/Professional Development Hours .. most of us know them.. its the crappy little 1hr.. 2hr.. things we do to keep our professional accredidations up to date. Some jerkoff in a meeting says 'Can we get the number of credit hours posted next to the information on the seminar..' This man.. is a civil engineer.. apparently he cannot do simple clock math.. if a seminar / webinar is from 12 to 1.. that is ONE hour. You get credit for ONE hour. (okay okay in his defense some times an hour and a half webinar gets just 1 hr of credit etc.. but its not rocket science and here's the kicker its for INTERNAL TRACKING ONLY not for their engineering license or the sort) Our company just encourages folks to professionally develop some (very small) amount of hours every year.
So .. not too crappy of a request.. until he has to twist off with a crappy little comment after I said 'welll sure.. Its the first I've heard the request but we can do it.. no problem.. I'll just have Human Resources send me the info..' and his CRAP ASS reply is 'Well I SENT IT to you last fall, I can resend you the email if you like..'
I have a number of ideas of just what that man can do with that email.. all of them involve some kind of rectal invasion.
Christ there are days when I feel like I'm baby sitting 150 people all of reasonable adult age. sigh
*end rant* Thanks for listening if you did..

I can relate. I am on what is called our Tiger Team. My job should I choose to accept it (yeah, I need the dang paycheck so what am I gonna say "No?") is to fix all the day to day mini-crises that occur on our systems. On the fly update queries to our databases (sounds dangerously stupid doesn't it?) and frankly I am darn good at it. Instead of having our wonderful actively programming developers build something that doesn't generate the stupid errors, I fix it. But if I suggest better processes to developing things that actually work, I get "Oh we don't have time to do that!". My favorite saying here is "There is never enough time to do it right, but there is always enough time to do it over!".
So yes Wiz I can relate. That is why my theme song is one called Banditos by a group called the Refreshments. Catch phrase from the lyrics is " .... the world is full of stupid people." And ain't it da truth!!!!
Another song is from Monty Python. "Always look on the bright side of life" Download that and play it in the background. It is the number one song on the planet for staying in your head long after it stops. And it is really good to play it around people you want to piss off.
Require everything in triplicate from your requestors and publish a queue. And when they piss you off, theirs goes down a few notches. Make them fight amongst themselves for priority. Help those who are nice to you first.
And lastly, see if you cna get your boss to implement the policy so that the people who whine have to go through him.
And if none of that works, find another job. And get yourself a real staff if they want you to stay.
Oh if you haven't figured it out, my week has been a piece of sheet too.

LOL poor sing.. yah a queue.. they've never heard of that.. I'm telling you 150 kids most over the age of 45. And they are ALL prima donas. Them? Wait? Are you insane?
Did you see the video of the woman at the airport who missed her flight and went into like a 10 minute full on melt down? I seriously could see half the people here doing that if their ever-important-needs were not immediately met.
As far as sending it through my boss.. well that's the thing.. I report to the CEO and that's it. He is also a billable CEO in that he still bills almost all his time to projects. If you're billing time to projects, unfortunately for a $30M / year company - that leaves you with little time to deal with personelle issues until they're MASSIVE issues.
So, I get to bitch and moan - and roll with it or as you say go find a new job.

well the stories I could tell you about dealing with personel issues. One of my jobs is at target and I do HR stuff there for about half the hours I work. We have about 200 people employed and let me tell you it is impossible to keep everyone happy, but I have to stay FFF(fun fast friendly) while I listen to some of the most stupid complaints problems, and most of the staff is not as educated as you work with. And people wonder why I like the time I spend alone every morning there counting money in a little room, its because its quiet. Well its Friday so hopefully that means for you a little escape from hell week, as for me its my weekend to work, so I'll have to put on a happy face and be all understanding and nice.

lol oh I hear ya Carm.. I live to serve... the problem with working with highly educated 4yr olds (in my case engineers and architects) is that they are paid to ALWAYS be right.. *twitch*

I'm almost glad that I'm just that little assistant that gets ordered here and there and everywhere. Just remember, the week ends, the projects finish, and that baseball bat's are an office workers best friend!

i'll trade you all for a) being a doctoral candidate who has to do her advisor's crap and b) also working at a psychiatric practice where i'm trying to inform crazy people [not all of them are crazy but let's say about 84%] how their insurance works..

hehe what can I say.....Hmm let's start with my Office, It has 2 doors in it, One that Grants entrance and exit from my office, the other goes to alley outback. My Employees, have slowly learned that if they wish to discuss something with me, they have to remain respectful, and calm. If they don't they know they will have a cool down period as they walk around the block to get back in to the building, and then finely back to my office. I treat my Employees very nice, And I expect them to treat me the same way.
Although I must mention that the great state of Ohio, does sometimes make me a bit Iron-Handed when dealing with my employee's becuase of Ohio being a no-fault state, I simply tell my employee's what that means to them when I have grown tired of rehashing the same old dispute. So far outta of six years of being the Boss only once have I dismissed someone, and they called the lightning down on themselves when they got caught having sex in the parking lot with a supplier.
So with all that said going to give you the best advice I ever received about being in charge! Be a Duck, When it begins to Rain, don't take it personnel, just let it bead up and slide right off your back. If you don't you may end up flying upside down, and you know what happens then...... you end up seeing Pyper becuase you done gone and Quacked Up!!
