Wow that news is stunning, but McCain just chose Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate. I predict record numbers of men tuning in to watch the VP debate. Let's just say she's not difficult to look at
Kidding aside though, I have 2 pictures, signed by her, on my wall. Each of my daughters standing with her at the governor's mansion in Juneau, AK for the annual 'meet the governor' Christmas celebration. I don't know if there's any other place in the United States where the governor of a state is so accessible.
Not only is she smart and articulate, but she's very in touch with her state and, I would imagine, would continue that in the White House.
Also, what a shrewd move for McCain. Not only does he provide an answer for the first black president with the first woman vice president (of the US), but he finds someone that balances out the fact that he'd be the oldest president ever elected, with a woman who may very well be the youngest VP ever.
I wonder if she'll wear her Miss Alaska sash to the debates?

Nice article. Definitely going to be an interesting election year. Nice to see both parties being so open-minded about their candidates. Personally when all this started I felt the Democrats had a slam dunk to win and though I applaud their choices, I thought that they might have been risking the slam dunk. I still think they had an edge. Now with this choice by the republicans I think that this is going to be one of the close ones.

Sorry, I know I'm an unabashed Palin fan, but being an Alaskan resident, I love most things Alaska So bear with me, and take it with a grain of salt if you must. Or hop on board, I got burgers and beer!

I completely hear and understand you both...wait until she starts discussing the issues, her abilities will shine through.
She won the governors seat from the republican Ted Kennedy wannabe in part because you know she is telling you exactly what she thinks. She doesn't pander in order to win votes. You'll either love her or hate her and elect her or not based on that; but you can never say she's not laying it on the line.

I have said this before but I still think it is a good idea.
Elect all officials for life and then have an election to see if they should be removed every two to four years. That way you eliminate the one year of doing their job followed by three years of trying to get re-elected.
And it seems like most politicians spend their whole careers trying to get re-elected even when they are not even in office yet.
I like the idea of someone who speaks her/his mind. If only more would follow that lead.

Nor for me. If I may wax philosophical, I think it's pretty unfortunate that I pretty much vote party line. I do only because one party endorses my values, while the other identifies with not endorsing my values. I guess that's the tragedy of how our political system has evolved into a two-party entity.
When the libertarians began throwing their hat into the ring, I actually thought they might make some inroads into making a more productive electoral process, but I haven't even heard from them in the last 8 years. Maybe we have Jesse Ventura to thank for that. In my opinion, he really crippled the credibility of the libertarian party in terms of being a viable option.
If there are those out there that are not as concerned about universal issues, and vote primarily based on what happens at home (which is legitimate), then the VP choice may make a difference. It's those swing votes.
Also I believe there are people out there that will vote for Obama because he's black, or vote for McCain because he has a woman VP, regardless of issues.
My own mother is a good example of these things. She voted for Bill Clinton, didn't even consider voting for Hillary, and won't vote for Obama. She is a swing vote depending on the speeches she hears, what people around her say, and finally (most likely) a gut feeling. Actually, it rather drives me crazy

It has on one occasion for me. Since I consider myself an independent, I usually wind up choosing between the lesser of two evils most elections.
The choice of a VP can be the deciding factor as it indicates the intelligence or lake thereof of the presidential candidate. And in the one case I stated, I could not bear the possibility that something might happen to the president and let that person become president. Quayle was a scary one but he was not the one I meant
I like a balanced congress and upsetting the apple cart every 4 years. When one party dominates, there is too much crap that gets through. With a balance, not as much gets through but what does is more likely to be well thought out.
Ok, I shut up now. Well for now anyway.
